REVIEW: The Light in the Wound by Christine Brae

Synopsis

Affected by her parents’ highly publicized divorce, Isabel grows up isolated and alone, with a resolve to never fall in love and repeat their mistakes.

When Jesse Cain enters her life, she falls hopelessly in love with him, and every sadness she’s ever felt is washed away by his intensity and passion. But people change as they grow up. Things can never stay the same forever.

Jesse and Isabel fight to stay together, determined to hold on to what they once had. Isabel wonders if a second love can ever be enough to make her forget her first.

My Thoughts

The Light in the Wound follows Isabel through her journey of growing up, falling in love, and discovering her true self.

Coming from a high profile family, things weren't always easy for Isabel and her sisters. After her parents' highly publicised divorce, Isabel's sisters were made to live with her father while Isabel remained with her maternal Grandparents.

Jesse is Isabel's first love. He's the school's star baseball player and on the student council. Although Jesse is popular, he comes from a different world to Isabel. He feels that he needs to prove to her family that he is good enough for her and will be able to support her financially in the future.

Over the course of their relationship Jesse becomes possessive, jealous and manipulative, causing Isabel to give up all the things she loves that define her as a person. She becomes a shadow of her former self.

Alex is one of Isabel's best friends, and he too is from a high profile family. Alex has secretly loved Isabel since the day that they met. He is always there for her and constantly bailing her out of trouble. Alex helps Isabel reclaim the person that she used to be, and admits his true feelings for her.

Isabel's thoughts continually return to Jesse. Is Jesse the love of her life? Is what she has with Alex strong enough for her to settle with him?

I found Christine Brae's writing style to be unique. The Light in the Wound was written in past tense - almost autobiographical. I was hooked from the prologue, and the story flowed nicely. I was continually intrigued while reading it, eager to know what was going to happen next as the story developed.

The Light in the Wound by Christine Brae was definitely a light in my reading week. It was a great page turner and I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book.

I was gifted a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
